Short answer

Short answer

The Tide Card Reader makes sense if you already bank with Tide or are happy to, and you want card takings landing in the same account as everything else. It does not make sense if you need a full till system, or if switching bank is a deal-breaker. The Plus is worth the extra only if customers regularly ask for a printed receipt.

What it actually costs to run

Hardware is a one-off. The number that decides whether this is cheap for you is the effective rate once the pence-per-transaction fee is included.

Indicative published rates for UK consumer debit cards.
PlanRateMonthly feeSuits
Pay As You Go1.5% + 5pNoneOccasional and seasonal card takings, or a business testing card payments for the first time.
Sell In-Person0.89% + 3p£17.99 + VATSteady weekly card takings where the lower transaction rate outweighs the subscription.
Sell In-Person Premium0.69% + 3p£19.99 + VATHigh-volume in-person selling where priority support and the lowest published reader rate matter.

Only the takings you expect to run through the card reader.

The number of separate card payments, not the value.

Optional. Leave at zero if nearly everything is a UK consumer debit card.

Plan you are costing

Pay As You Go monthly cost

£70.00

£70.00 processing + £0.00 subscription including VAT.

Effective rate

1.75%

Total monthly cost as a percentage of card turnover.

Annual estimate

Average sale

£20.00

Low average sales are hit hardest by the fixed pence-per-transaction fee.

Plan comparison at these figures

  • Pay As You Go£70.00 / month · 1.75%
  • Sell In-Person£63.19 / month · 1.58%
  • Sell In-Person Premium£57.59 / month · 1.44%

At this volume, Sell In-Person Premium is the cheaper of the two by £6.81 a month, before hardware. Hardware is a separate one-off cost.

Estimates only. Rates shown are for domestic consumer debit cards. Credit cards, commercial cards and non-UK cards commonly attract different, usually higher, fees. Check the current Tide fee schedule for the card types you actually accept.

Formulas and rate assumptions used in this calculator

Monthly processing = (turnover × plan percentage) + (transactions × fixed fee). The optional credit and commercial card share adds an indicative 0.4 percentage points to that portion of turnover, because published debit rates do not apply to those cards.

Subscription costs are shown including VAT at 20%. Processing fees are shown as charged. VAT-registered businesses can normally recover input VAT, so compare like with like for your own registration status.

  • Pay As You Go: 1.5% + 5p on domestic consumer debit cards, no subscription.
  • Sell In-Person: 0.89% + 3p on domestic consumer debit cards, £17.99 + VAT a month.
  • Sell In-Person Premium: 0.69% + 3p on domestic consumer debit cards, £19.99 + VAT a month.

Nothing you type here is stored or transmitted. Only the fact that the calculator was used is recorded, and only if you accepted analytics.

Settlement timing

Next Day Settlement Boost costs £2.99 + VAT/month on Pay As You Go and Sell In-Person Essential; it is included with Sell In-Person Premium. Tide’s product page currently advertises next-day settlement for card readers. The optional Next Day Settlement add-on costs an indicative £2.99 + VAT a month.

Plan for the gap, not the best case

Weekends, bank holidays and cut-off times all push money back. If your week depends on Friday takings being available on Saturday morning, confirm the cut-off with the provider before you rely on it.

Where it falls short

  • No paper receipts, so customers who need a printed VAT receipt must accept email
  • Requires an eligible Tide business account, so it is not a standalone reader
  • Small display is less comfortable for staff who key in totals all day
  • Almost three times the weight of the standard reader, so less comfortable to carry
  • Higher hardware price, and receipt paper is an ongoing consumable
  • Still requires an eligible Tide business account

If any of those are dealbreakers, start from the comparison hub instead of this page.
