Review methodology

The criteria, weightings and evidence behind our card reader assessments, including what we have and have not tested in person.

Short answer

Short answer

We assess readers on the total cost of accepting a realistic trading month, then on settlement, hardware, connectivity, support and contract terms. Research is desk-based against official documentation unless a page says otherwise.

The criteria

  • Total cost of acceptance: We evaluate all associated costs, including percentage transaction fees, fixed charges per transaction, subscription fees, and expenses for hardware and optional add-ons. These fees are analysed to provide an effective rate considering monthly and yearly trading volumes, helping UK businesses understand the true cost implications, inclusive of VAT, of accepting different types of cards.
  • Settlement and cash flow: We assess the industry standard for settlement speeds, including any additional costs associated with faster settlement options. Considering cash flow is vital for UK SMEs, we delve into how quickly funds are deposited into a business's account and any fees that may impact liquidity.
  • Hardware and connectivity: An in-depth review of device specifications, including battery life, receipt printing capabilities, and reliance on either SIM or Wi-Fi for connectivity. We also test how payment devices operate in areas with poor signal, crucial for businesses operating in rural UK locations or at outdoor events.
  • Contract and exit: Examination of contract lengths, termination notice periods, and conditions regarding ownership or return of hardware upon contract termination. We also consider the flexibility provided to businesses in scenarios involving changing business needs or scaling down operations.
  • Support and compliance: We evaluate customer support options, availability hours, and the provider's assistance with PCI compliance. For UK businesses, this includes assessing local support availability and ensuring compliance with UK-specific data protection and financial regulations.

How we model cost

To provide an accurate cost analysis, we conduct simulations for both a low-value, high-volume trader and a high-value, low-volume trader, using published domestic consumer debit card rates exclusive of VAT. Recognising that credit, commercial, and non-UK card transactions incur higher fees, we highlight these differences explicitly rather than merging them into an averaged rate. This approach ensures that UK businesses receive a transparent view of potential expenses.

Our analysis scenarios include a mobile market trader with approximately 3,000 transactions per month at an average of £4–£5 per sale and a specialised service provider with 20 transactions monthly at an average of £400 each. This spectrum captures the diversity of UK small businesses, illustrating how different pricing models benefit distinct business types under varying trading conditions.

Hardware expenses are amortised over three years, acknowledging the need for businesses to plan for long-term expenditures. Monthly subscriptions are included in full throughout the period. Optional add-ons are considered only if they are realistically necessary for the scenario. The objective is to render all costs into a unified effective rate, facilitating a genuine comparison of various pricing structures.

Evidence and limits

We meticulously source and date our data, clearly citing where our information originates. In instances where we have not personally tested a device, we transparently disclose this to avoid misleading representations. Provider claims are attributed properly, ensuring our analysis retains integrity.

Desk research has inherent limitations. For instance, it cannot evaluate real-world efficacy of contactless performance under adverse weather conditions, response times of support services at unusual hours, or software compatibility with older UK mobile models. Where these elements are crucial, our content specifies the need for direct enquiry with providers, empowering business owners to make informed decisions.

Moreover, published rates are initial guides rather than fixed commitments. A business's specific rate can vary post-onboarding, and pricing strategies may shift without notice. Therefore, figures are accurate as of the last verification date, which we clearly state to maintain transparency and trust with our UK audience.

Conflicts of interest

Our site earns referral commissions on qualifying Tide applications, a fact disclosed on all related pages. Importantly, these commercial relationships do not influence our scoring methodologies, rankings, or recommendations.

Recognising the realities of such incentives, our methodology is designed to prioritise unyielding metrics like mathematical calculations based on publicised rates, clearly defined settlement timeframes, and transparent descriptions of product limitations. Each product's page presents a balanced view, including its drawbacks, and our comparison pages identify rival solutions that meet specific business criteria more effectively.

What we deliberately do not score

Aggregate customer review scores. These scores are often biased towards complaints or account termination matters that are unrelated to the payment reader's function. They also lack verification from primary sources, which compromises objectivity.

Brand or design. While branding might be visually compelling, it does not affect the operational costs of a month's transactions or the reliability of payment processing in challenging conditions typical in UK settings.

Features you are unlikely to use. Lengthy feature lists can make products appear more appealing without contributing to meaningful decision-making. We focus on functionalities that impact cost-effectiveness, processing speed, data accuracy, or transaction reliability, leaving surface-level features to the manufacturer's description.

How a review is actually produced

Our review process begins with the collection of primary resources, including pricing pages, contractual terms, device specifications, and pertinent information from provider help centres. These documents are archived with their corresponding access dates for reference.

Entered values are plugged into our consistent cost model. Effective rates for outlined scenarios provide comparative insights across different providers. Throughout, qualitative elements like connectivity, battery performance, receipt issuance, exit terms, and customer support channels are evaluated. Any informational gaps are reported as such.

Reviews conclude with a tailored summary detailing product suitability for varying business requirements and suggesting conditions that might alter these evaluations. Content accuracy is paramount, and each review is verified against archival sources before publication. Periodic updates reflect any pricing adjustments, maintaining the review's relevance and accuracy for UK businesses.

Understanding UK Payment Regulations

The UK payments landscape is governed by strict regulations designed to protect consumers and businesses. Familiarising yourself with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) guidelines and Payment Services Regulations (PSR) is essential for maintaining compliance and ensuring the security and efficiency of transactions.

PCI compliance, reflecting global data security standards, is a critical consideration when selecting a payment provider. The repercussions of non-compliance could be severe, including potential fines and reputation damage. Our reviews highlight each provider's approach to helping customers meet these requirements.

It's also important for businesses to consider the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) while processing payment information. Understanding these legal frameworks enables UK businesses to make informed decisions that safeguard their operations and customer trust.

Frequently asked questions

Have you used these readers yourself?
Current pages are desk research against official documentation and published pricing. Where hands-on use informs a page, it is stated explicitly on that page.
How are the criteria weighted?
Total cost of acceptance carries the most weight, then settlement and cash flow, then hardware and connectivity, then support and contract terms.
How often are reviews updated?
Pricing and promotional details are rechecked at least every 21 days; full reviews are revisited when a provider changes pricing, hardware or terms.
Why don't you publish a single score out of ten?
Because a single score hides the variable that decides the answer. The same reader can be the cheapest option for a plumber and the most expensive for a coffee kiosk, so we describe fit rather than pretending one number applies to everyone.
Do you accept devices or payment from providers?
We do not accept payment for coverage. If a provider supplies a device for testing, that fact is disclosed on the page and the device is not returned in exchange for favourable wording.
What would make you change a verdict?
A pricing change, a hardware revision, a change in settlement terms, or credible evidence that a claim we relied on is wrong. Reader reports are taken seriously and checked against the provider's own documentation.
