Suggested starting point
Tide Card Reader (standard)
- • Email receipts suit you, so the printer premium is wasted money.
- • You are open to a Tide business account, so takings and banking reconcile in one app.
- • It is the cheaper of the two Tide devices and covers everyday counter trade.
Worth a look too: Tide Card Reader Plus — Move up only if a customer will eventually demand a printed receipt.
Formulas and rate assumptions used in this calculator
This tool is a guided shortlist, not advice. It weights three things in order: whether printed receipts are required, whether you will open the business account a given reader depends on, and whether your volume justifies paying a monthly subscription for a lower rate.
Average sale value only changes the outcome where fixed pence-per-transaction pricing would dominate. It does not model your exact costs — do that in the fee calculator, which uses published rates and your own turnover figures.
We have a referral relationship with Tide. Tide is only suggested where your answers match what it actually does well, and an alternative is always shown alongside it.
How to read the result
The suggestion is a starting point, not a verdict. It tells you which shortlist to spend your time on so you are not reading nine reviews for a decision that hinges on one requirement.
Once you have a shortlist, the money question is the effective rate — total fees divided by total card turnover, including any monthly subscription and the hardware amortised over the period you will keep it. Work that out in the fee calculator, and if Tide is on your list, compare its two plans in the Tide plan calculator.
If the reasoning behind the questions is not obvious, read how to choose a card reader and how card reader fees work. Trade-specific picks are in card readers by business type.
